User Research

Interviews

Number of Participants: 5

Key Insights

  • Cats and Dogs are the most popular pets to adopt

  • Most Participants had a positive experience with adoption

  • Participants feel like they are doing something good when they adopt pets.

  • Most participants use social media to find pets

Competitive Audit

“Worst thing about the apps and websites is that they are often visually low quality, and none of them have aggregated all the information from across these websites. Basically, it would be nice if an app could present the adoption listings from across ALL the various sites and apps. This way, I only have to use ONE source.”

 Proposed Solution

Design a website that provides information regarding a pet's adoption status and also provides details about a pet's behavioral and medical needs.

To address the user's pain points of

  • Lack of real-time updates regarding a pet's adoption status

Notify users of any changes in their potential pet's adoption status.

  • Not being aware of a pet's behavioural needs/ challenges upfront

Include this information in the pet's description and provide counselling for treatment and care before adoption

From comparing the direct competitors in the competitive analysis, most of the competitors had a 'pet search'. A search function; that allows persons to search for pets via location, age, etc. Since this is standard across websites I decided to include a pet search in my solution.

Usability Study

I conducted an unmoderated usability study with 5 participants. I sent a link and a post-test questionnaire for participants to record their thoughts.

Key Performance Indicators

  • Use of navigation vs search

  • System usability scale

  • Drop off rates

All participants preferred to use the navigation bar over the search.

None of the participants failed to finish their tasks. However, 1-2 participants completed select tasks with some difficulty.

Insights

Content Size

  • Content appeared too big on users' devices. They often had to scroll to find CTAs.

Difficulty Scheduling Meetings

  • Users had difficulty finding the schedule meeting button and what exactly the meeting was for. So, I added descriptions and added navigation links in the header to the ‘Schedule Meeting’ page.

Clearer Labels Needed

  • Users were not clear on what the ‘take quiz’ and 'schedule meeting' buttons meant or their usage.

Expansion of Filter

  • Users wanted to be able to filter by age and pet size

Next Steps

  • More user interviews and tests, to determine other possible opportunities to simplify the user's experience. And how to make persons feel more rewarded when adopting a pet.

  • Provision of an online payment/donation platform
