BimHealth
Project Overview
Bimhealth is a health management application for the Barbadian public.
Bimhealth is a conceptual project designed as part of the Google UX Certification course, Design a User Experience for Social Good.
BimHealth aims to combat the high rate of non-communicable diseases that are affecting the Barbadian community by providing healthy recipes and workouts to be done at home or the gym.
If developed, success would be at least 22000 Monthly Active Users and a retention rate of 20%.

01. Empathize
User Research
I conducted moderated interviews with four Barbadian participants both remotely and in person.
I assumed most Barbadians do not exercise due to the perception of the laid-back island culture often associated with the Caribbean Islands. However, I found that Barbadians desire to be active, but; exercise is not as high on their list of priorities. They are also concerned with what they are ingesting and are generally aware that they can eat and be healthier.
The Barbados National Registry states that NCDs(Non-Communicable Diseases) such as stroke and heart attack, along with diabetes and hypertension, are the leading cause of death in the country. Research shows that being overweight/obese and not being active puts you at risk of developing diabetes(NIH,2016). And for hypertension, being overweight, consuming too much salt and alcohol, eating too few fruits and vegetables and being over the age of 65 puts you at risk of developing hypertension(NHS,2019).
Despite our user's awareness of their health, according to the Ministry of Health, 'Across all sectors of our communities, NCD challenges include low fruit and vegetable intake, high salt consumption, and high fat intake. For example, research has shown that 79 per cent of women and 89 per cent of men consume more than the recommended 1.5 grams of sodium per day.'
02. Define
Problem Statements
Using insights from the empathize phase, I created problem statements for each user.
Personas
Competitive Analysis
When looking at the competition, I realized they are no direct competitors for an app for health focused on the Barbadian public/market.
The closest health app I found dedicated to Barbadians was BimSafe. BimSafe is an app targeted to travelers, locals and tourists; to track their location and symptoms. The application aims to aid the Ministry of Health and Wellness in the prevention of Covid-19 spread.
Another app dedicated to Barbadians, WiFetch, is an online shopping and delivery service.WiFetch has expanded to Trinidad and targets persons who prefer to shop online.
After finding no competitors in the local market, I then; branched out into fitness/health apps/websites which target global audiences.
03. Ideate
How Might We
How might we get old people to track their diet?
Simple watch device that persons speak into to record what they are eating
How might we help persons feel supported in their health journey?
Create a community where people can post their meals and general experiences on the health journey
How might we create an active culture?
Frequent exercises or sports events incorporating the local culture
How might we help people be more aware of what they are putting in their bodies?
Labelling ingredients/recipes that are high in sugar salt etc
How might we help people remember to exercise?
Alarms and push notifications
How might we help people to make time for exercising?
Can make it a family-friendly activity by creating exercise spots and daycare services where the parent can drop their children off and go exercise and pick them up when they are done
After these exercises, I began to sketch my ideas on paper.

05. Test
Usability Study
I carried out remote unmoderated testing using Maze user testing software in Barbados.
Round 2(Mobile Website): 5 Participants
Insights
Participants completed all tasks successfully with a 0 % Drop Off Rate
75% of Participants believe the website is easy to use
Based on the results, no further changes needed to be made to the design at the current stage
Round 1(Mobile Application): 4 Participants(Due To Time Constraints)
Insights
The font size was too small, and hierarchy was difficult to distinguish.
Solution: Increase and Diversify Font Sizes and Weights
There are too many options on one page when onboarding.
Solution: Separate the onboarding process into multiple pages.
The application is easy to navigate.
Next Steps
Addition of a 'BimHealth' Community where users can ask for help/motivation/tips or share progress with others
In this current iteration, we've added a switch account feature so that, for example, a family member can create and manage an account for an elderly individual. The elderly are not likely to use the application or website. However, they're more likely to suffer from NCDs. To address this, I propose implementing short TV programs of BimHealth content to target the elderly.
Addition of more cultural activities, for example, Road Tennis
